Coco Gauff is starting to look very comfortable in New York again.
The 2023 US Open champion just powered her way into the quarterfinals with a dominant 6-1, 6-4 victory over fellow American Iva Jovic, and suddenly, Gauff’s title hopes are looking very real.
This wasn’t one of those matches where Gauff had to fight her way through trouble.
She took control.
After exchanging early breaks, Gauff found her rhythm and won the next five games to take the opening set in just over 30 minutes. Jovic tried to fight back in the second, but Gauff’s consistency and power eventually proved too much.
Gauff isn’t dropping sets
Here’s the part that should have the rest of the draw paying attention.
Gauff has not lost a set at this year’s US Open.
She has now won nine straight matches dating back to her Cincinnati title run, and she has taken 20 consecutive sets during that stretch.
That’s the kind of form you want heading into the final stages of a Grand Slam.
And this time, Gauff looked particularly sharp.
She hit 18 winners compared with Jovic’s nine, while making just 15 unforced errors to Jovic’s 30.
That’s a pretty convincing difference.
Now comes a MUCH bigger test
Gauff’s next opponent is Mirra Andreeva, and this is where things get really interesting.
Andreeva, the reigning French Open champion, also booked her place in the quarterfinals and is making her deepest-ever run at the US Open.
Gauff has already beaten Andreeva five times in their previous meetings, but this is a completely different stage.
One match separates them from the US Open semifinals.
And both players have plenty to prove.
For Gauff, it’s about showing that her 2023 championship wasn’t a one-time moment.
For Andreeva, it’s another opportunity to show that she’s becoming one of the biggest young stars in women’s tennis.
Could Gauff actually win it again?
That’s the question getting harder to ignore.
Gauff hasn’t dropped a set.
She’s coming off a Cincinnati title.
She’s now back in the US Open quarterfinals for the first time since winning the tournament in 2023.
And perhaps most importantly, she looks confident.
The road isn’t going to get easier from here. The remaining field is loaded with Grand Slam champions and dangerous young stars.
But if Gauff continues playing at this level, nobody is going to want to see her on the other side of the net.
