The Washington Wizards have found their next franchise cornerstone, selecting AJ Dybantsa with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.

After an outstanding freshman season at BYU, Dybantsa entered the draft as the consensus top prospect and lived up to expectations. The 6-foot-9 wing averaged a nation-leading 25.5 points per game while adding 6.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists, showcasing the complete offensive skill set that made him the most coveted player in this year’s draft class.

Dybantsa also made history by becoming the first player from BYU to be selected first overall in the NBA Draft. His combination of size, athleticism, shot creation, and defensive versatility has drawn comparisons to some of the league’s elite two-way wings, making him the centerpiece of Washington’s rebuilding plans.

“I’m ready to get to work,” Dybantsa said after hearing his name called, embracing the challenge of helping turn the Wizards into a playoff contender.

The Wizards believe Dybantsa can become the face of the franchise alongside veteran guard Trae Young, giving the organization a promising foundation for the future. His arrival signals a new era in Washington as the team looks to return to playoff contention after several rebuilding seasons.

With immense expectations and star potential, all eyes will now be on Dybantsa as he prepares for NBA Summer League and begins his professional career in Washington.
