Deshaun Watson walked back onto the field in Cleveland expecting to hear some support.

Instead, he heard something very different.

Boos.

Watson returned to play in front of Browns fans during Saturday’s preseason game against the Buffalo Bills, his first home appearance since suffering a serious Achilles injury in 2024.

It didn’t take long for the crowd to make its feelings known.

And Watson wasn’t exactly quiet about it afterward.

The Browns Got Crushed

Cleveland’s night was already going badly before Watson entered the game.

The Browns eventually fell 31–7 to Buffalo, with rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders starting and playing the first half. Sanders threw a touchdown and an interception before Watson took over.

Watson finished with just 5 completions on 12 attempts for 35–36 yards and an interception.

Not exactly the performance he needed.

Then came the boos.

And they were loud enough that Watson addressed them after the game.

“It’s Personal”

Watson didn’t brush the reaction off.

He called the booing “disrespectful” and “personal”, and reminded reporters that the last time he played at Cleveland’s stadium, he suffered his Achilles injury — an injury that some fans had actually cheered when it happened.

That’s clearly something Watson hasn’t forgotten.

Whether you agree with him or not, there’s no question the relationship between the quarterback and Cleveland fans is badly damaged.

And right now, he’s got another problem.

Shedeur Sanders Is Making This Interesting 👀

While Watson struggled, Sanders showed enough to keep the quarterback competition alive.

Sanders completed 9 of 11 passes for 74 yards, a touchdown and an interception during his time on the field. Browns coach Todd Monken still hasn’t named his starting quarterback, but he had plenty of positive things to say about Sanders’ progress.

Even more interesting?

Sanders actually defended Watson after the game.

Despite competing for the same starting job, Sanders said he didn’t appreciate the fans booing his teammate and stressed that they’re all human beings.

That’s probably not what most people expected.

So What Happens Now?

That’s the question everybody around Cleveland is asking.

Watson has the experience and the massive contract.

Sanders has the momentum.

And Browns fans appear to have already made their feelings pretty clear.

The preseason isn’t supposed to create this much drama, but Cleveland’s quarterback battle has become one of the biggest stories surrounding the team before the regular season even begins.

Watson still believes he can win the fans back.

But after everything that’s happened, that’s going to be a tough sell.

For now, one thing is obvious:

Deshaun Watson has heard the boos.

And judging by his reaction, he isn’t forgetting them anytime soon.
