Darren Waller isn’t ready to walk away from football just yet.
The veteran tight end has found another home, agreeing to a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers after making his return to the NFL last season with the Miami Dolphins.
At 33 years old, Waller isn’t the same explosive player who once terrorized defenses with the Las Vegas Raiders. But that’s exactly what makes this move interesting.
Because if he can stay healthy, Carolina may have just added a player who can still make a difference when the ball gets near the end zone.
Waller Still Has Something Left
Waller stepped away from football after the 2023 season before returning in 2025 with Miami. He only appeared in nine games, but he made those appearances count, finishing with 24 receptions for 283 yards and six touchdowns.
Those numbers don’t jump off the page until you look at the touchdown total.
Six touchdowns in nine games showed that Waller can still be a dangerous target, particularly around the goal line.
And Carolina clearly believes there’s enough left in the tank to give him another opportunity.
This Isn’t the Same Waller From His Raiders Days
There was a time when Waller was one of the most dangerous receiving tight ends in football.
With the Raiders, he produced back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2019 and 2020 and earned a Pro Bowl selection. His 2020 season was especially impressive, as he finished with 107 receptions for 1,196 yards.
But injuries have become a major part of his story.
He didn’t play at all in 2024, then returned to play only nine games in 2025. That makes durability the biggest question hanging over this latest chapter.
Why Carolina Took the Chance
The Panthers already have several tight ends on the roster, so this wasn’t necessarily a move they had to make.
But Waller gives Carolina something the younger players don’t have: experience.
He has been in big games, played at a Pro Bowl level and knows how to find soft spots in a defense. He also has a connection with Panthers assistant coach Darrell Bevell, who previously worked with Waller in Miami.
That familiarity could make the transition easier.
For Carolina, this is basically a low-risk bet: give Waller one more opportunity and see whether the veteran can stay healthy long enough to make an impact.
The Real Question: How Long Can He Stay Healthy?
That’s the part Panthers fans have to be watching.
Nobody is questioning whether Waller can still catch a football. His six touchdowns last season proved that.
The bigger issue is whether his body will allow him to play consistently.
If Waller stays healthy, he could become a sneaky weapon for Carolina and give the offense another experienced target.
If injuries catch up with him again, this could end up being another short chapter in a career that has already seen plenty of twists and turns.
Either way, Darren Waller isn’t finished.
And now, Carolina is betting that there’s still a little bit of that old Pro Bowl tight end left in him.
