Alex Bregman picked a pretty good time to remind everyone what he can do with a baseball bat.

The Chicago Cubs third baseman absolutely torched the Washington Nationals on Wednesday night, launching three home runs and driving in a career-high seven runs as Chicago rolled to a 12–6 victory.

And here’s the crazy part: Bregman had never hit three homers in a single MLB game before.

Now he has.

Bregman Couldn’t Be Stopped

Bregman didn’t wait around to make his presence felt.

He eventually found the seats three times, with his final blast coming in the eighth inning to put the finishing touches on a huge night for Chicago. By the time he was done, he had accounted for seven of the Cubs’ runs himself.

That’s the kind of performance that can completely change the mood around a team.

The Cubs weren’t just winning they were having fun doing it.

Dansby Swanson added a home run of his own, while Chicago’s offense continued its recent hot streak. The Cubs have now won eight of their last nine games and moved to 71–50 on the season.

This Could Be Bigger Than One Crazy Night

Bregman’s three-homer explosion didn’t come completely out of nowhere.

He’s been finding his rhythm lately after a difficult first half. Over his previous 26 games entering this matchup, he was batting .324 with nine home runs.

So while three homers in one night is obviously ridiculous, there’s a bigger story developing here.

Bregman appears to be heating up at exactly the right time.

And that’s something the rest of the National League probably doesn’t want to see.

The Cubs Are Suddenly Rolling

Chicago’s offense has been putting together some serious momentum, and Bregman’s breakout night only adds another dangerous bat to the lineup.

The Cubs are now just three games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central, giving them plenty to play for as the season heads toward the stretch run.

Nobody knows whether Bregman can keep hitting like this realistically, nobody can.

But if Wednesday night was a preview of what’s coming, the Cubs may have just found another gear.

Three home runs. Seven RBIs. One ridiculous night.

Alex Bregman wasn’t just hot.

He was on fire.
