Week 1 is supposed to be about excitement.
New teams. New coaches. New quarterbacks. New expectations.
But every NFL season comes with one uncomfortable reality: availability can change everything.
The 2026 season is already showing us that.
Before Sunday’s main slate of games even gets going, several important players are dealing with injuries, uncertain statuses or situations that could dramatically affect how their teams begin the season. Some are expected to play. Others won’t. But the impact of those situations could stretch far beyond one afternoon.
That is why I don’t think the biggest Week 1 stories should simply be about who scores the most touchdowns.
The bigger question is:
Which players could completely change the outlook of their teams based on what happens this weekend?
Here are five I believe deserve the most attention.
5. Joey Porter Jr. — Pittsburgh Steelers
Joey Porter Jr. is already dealing with one of the strangest Week 1 situations in the NFL.
The Steelers cornerback is listed as questionable because of a back injury, but his situation is also tied to a contract dispute with Pittsburgh. Reports indicate that Porter is unlikely to play against Atlanta, while the Steelers have reportedly been listening to trade offers for him.
That’s a lot of drama before a single regular-season snap.
And it matters because Porter isn’t just another defensive back.
The fourth-year corner has established himself as an important part of Pittsburgh’s defense, and the Steelers are entering the season with expectations that they can compete in the AFC.
If Porter doesn’t play, Atlanta could immediately test Pittsburgh’s secondary.
If he does play and performs well, it could send a completely different message.
It could also remind everyone why Pittsburgh has been reluctant to simply move on from him.
SportsLoud opinion
I think Pittsburgh needs to solve the Porter situation quickly.
The worst-case scenario isn’t necessarily losing one game without him.
It’s allowing a contract dispute to become a season-long distraction.
Week 1 impact: High
SportsLoud prediction: If Porter sits, Atlanta will target his replacement repeatedly.
4. Alvin Kamara — New Orleans Saints
Kamara’s situation is different because this isn’t about a contract.
It’s about whether one of the Saints’ most important offensive players is healthy enough to make an impact.
Kamara suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain in his right knee during training camp, creating uncertainty heading into New Orleans’ Week 1 matchup against Detroit.
And that’s a massive concern for a Saints offense that needs reliable playmakers.
Kamara isn’t simply a running back.
He’s one of those players who can influence the game as a runner, receiver and check-down option.
That versatility becomes especially important when you’re playing a team like Detroit.
If Kamara is limited, New Orleans could struggle to maintain drives.
If he is healthy enough to play at his normal level, suddenly the Saints have a player capable of forcing Detroit to account for him on almost every down.
Kamara vs. today’s elite running backs
Kamara may not have the same pure rushing reputation as Derrick Henry or Jonathan Taylor, but that’s not really the comparison that matters.
Kamara’s value comes from versatility.
Henry can overwhelm defenses with power.
Taylor can break away with explosive runs.
Kamara can hurt you in multiple ways.
That’s why his availability matters so much.
SportsLoud prediction
If Kamara plays and looks healthy, don’t be surprised if he becomes one of the most important players on the field.
Week 1 impact: Very high
SportsLoud prediction: Kamara finishes with 100-plus total yards if his workload isn’t restricted.
3. Brock Bowers — Las Vegas Raiders
This might be the player whose absence could create the biggest offensive problem.
Brock Bowers is sidelined after undergoing a meniscus procedure, meaning Las Vegas will begin the season without one of its most dynamic offensive weapons. Michael Mayer is expected to take over as the Raiders’ primary tight end.
And that changes the entire equation for the Raiders.
Bowers isn’t just a tight end who occasionally catches passes.
He is a matchup problem.
Linebackers can struggle to stay with him.
Safeties have to respect his size and receiving ability.
And defenses can’t treat him like an ordinary role player.
Without him, the Raiders have to find another way to create those mismatches.
That’s especially important because Las Vegas is already entering a season with plenty of questions surrounding its offense.
Bowers vs. the next generation of tight ends
If Bowers were healthy, I would have no problem putting him in the conversation with the most dangerous young tight ends in football.
The difference between Bowers and a traditional tight end is what he can do after the catch.
He’s essentially another offensive weapon who happens to line up at tight end.
That’s why his absence could be much bigger than the box score suggests.
SportsLoud opinion
The Raiders shouldn’t panic over one injury.
But if Bowers misses significant time, I think their offensive ceiling drops considerably.
Week 1 impact: Very high
SportsLoud prediction: Las Vegas will struggle to replace Bowers’ receiving production early in the season.
2. Malik Nabers — New York Giants
This is the most fascinating situation on the list.
Malik Nabers is officially questionable for Sunday night’s Giants-Cowboys matchup after recovering from the ACL tear he suffered last season.
The encouraging news?
Nabers participated fully in practice all week.
The concerning news?
He has made it clear that he isn’t willing to risk his long-term career simply because the season opener is here.
And honestly, I agree with him.
There is nothing wrong with being cautious.
A football season lasts 18 weeks.
A career can last more than a decade.
One game isn’t worth jeopardizing that.
But from the Giants’ perspective, his potential absence is enormous.
New York already has questions at wide receiver, and the team has made moves to prepare for the possibility that Nabers won’t be available. Veteran Odell Beckham Jr. could have an expanded role if Nabers sits.
And that brings us to the bigger issue.
Jaxson Dart needs Nabers
The Giants’ young quarterback needs reliable weapons around him.
Nabers gives him exactly that.
A healthy Nabers can take pressure off the quarterback simply because defenses have to account for him.
Without him, Dallas can potentially devote more attention to the rest of New York’s offense.
That’s why this isn’t just a Malik Nabers story.
It’s a Giants story.
SportsLoud prediction
I don’t think the Giants should rush Nabers.
If he isn’t 100 percent comfortable, sit him.
The season is too long to gamble with a young star’s future.
Week 1 impact: Massive
SportsLoud prediction: If Nabers doesn’t play, Dallas has a significant defensive advantage.
1. Tua Tagovailoa — Miami Dolphins
This is my No. 1 because quarterback availability can change an entire team’s identity.
Tua Tagovailoa has been ruled out of Atlanta’s Week 1 matchup with Pittsburgh? No — that’s actually the Falcons situation.
For Miami’s Week 1 matchup against Las Vegas, the Dolphins enter with questions surrounding their quarterback situation and offensive health, making the opening game especially important for how the offense develops.
But there’s another quarterback situation that is even more dramatic today.
Atlanta will be without Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr., leaving Cooper Rush to start against Pittsburgh.
That is a massive shift.
Penix was expected to be an important part of Atlanta’s future, while Tagovailoa’s arrival created another major storyline around the franchise.
Instead, neither is available for the opener.
And now Rush has to step in.
This is why quarterbacks change everything
Imagine spending an entire offseason preparing for one quarterback.
Then another quarterback takes the field.
Your defensive game plan changes.
Your offensive expectations change.
Your team’s entire approach can change.
That’s why quarterback injuries have an impact far beyond the player himself.
And Atlanta’s situation is a perfect example.
SportsLoud prediction
I expect Pittsburgh to attack Atlanta’s quarterback situation early.
If Cooper Rush struggles, the Falcons could be forced into a much more conservative game plan.
If he surprises everyone, however, Atlanta could steal a huge early-season win.
Week 1 impact: Massive
The SportsLoud Week 1 Impact Ranking
If I rank these five situations based on how dramatically they could affect their teams:
1. Tua Tagovailoa / Atlanta quarterback situation
2. Malik Nabers
3. Brock Bowers
4. Alvin Kamara
5. Joey Porter Jr.
But here’s the important part.
These aren’t necessarily the five “most injured” players in the NFL.
They’re the five situations I think could change the direction of their teams’ Week 1 stories.
And that’s a much more interesting conversation.
The Bigger NFL Question
Every year, we spend the summer predicting which teams will win the Super Bowl.
We rank quarterbacks.
We rank offenses.
We debate MVP candidates.
Then Week 1 arrives and reminds us of something much simpler:
Football is about who is actually available.
A superstar sitting on the sideline can completely change a matchup.
A young player returning from injury can suddenly become the biggest story of the weekend.
And a backup quarterback can go from being an afterthought to becoming the most important player on the roster.
That’s what makes Week 1 so unpredictable.
SportsLoud’s Final Prediction
If I had to pick one player from this list whose situation will have the biggest impact on the season, I’m going with Malik Nabers.
Not because he is the most accomplished player here.
Because the Giants need him.
If Nabers returns healthy and stays healthy, New York’s offense has a completely different ceiling.
If he struggles physically or misses significant time, the Giants could quickly find themselves fighting an uphill battle.
And that’s the beauty — and danger — of Week 1.
We think we know what these teams are.
Then the games begin.
And suddenly, everything can change.
