According to sources, Messi informed Barcelona of his decision Saturday amid a battle with the club regarding the language in his contract.
Photos showed players arriving for coronavirus tests on Sunday morning and Messi did not appear.
Messi’s decision not to attend means he will be unable to participate in Ronald Koeman’s first training session as Barcelona’s new head coach on Monday afternoon.
It is understood that Messi’s decision not to turn up was purely on the fact that it might undermine his legality to leave the club.

Messi and his legal team are reportedly arguing that he can leave the club without triggering a €700 million release clause in his contract since he informed the team of his decision within a certain time frame.
Barcelona insists Messi missed the deadline which was supposed to be in June, but Messi and his representatives believe the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the end of the La Liga season means his decision was made in time.
