Devon Witherspoon just got paid.

And when I say paid, I mean paid.

The Seattle Seahawks have agreed to a four-year extension worth $132 million, with more than $101 million guaranteed. The deal makes Witherspoon the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.

Not bad for a guy who entered the league just three years ago.

But here’s the question Seahawks fans are probably asking:

Is he actually worth it?

Seattle Didn’t Hesitate

Witherspoon was already heading into the final stretch of his rookie contract, and Seattle had exercised his fifth-year option earlier this year.

They could have waited.

They didn’t.

Instead, the Seahawks decided to lock him up long-term, giving him an average of $33 million per year in new money. That’s more than the previous top of the cornerback market.

Clearly, Seattle believes this isn’t just another good corner.

They believe they’ve got one of the faces of their defense.

And honestly, it’s hard to argue with what he’s done so far.

He’s Been Good From Day One

Witherspoon was the No. 5 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Since then, he’s made the Pro Bowl in each of his first three seasons.

That’s ridiculous consistency for a young cornerback.

He’s played 43 games, recording 249 tackles, 32 passes defended, 4.5 sacks and two interceptions. He also played a major role in Seattle’s Super Bowl-winning season, including a sack in Super Bowl LX.

So this isn’t a contract based purely on potential.

There’s already a pretty impressive résumé sitting there.

And Seattle Is Betting on What Comes Next

This is probably the biggest reason for the contract.

Witherspoon is only 25.

Seattle isn’t paying him $132 million because they think his best football is behind him.

They’re betting that his best years are still coming.

That’s what makes the contract so interesting.

If Witherspoon keeps developing, Seattle could look back at this deal in a few years and think they got him at the right time.

But if his play doesn’t reach another level?

That $132 million is going to look very different.

That’s the risk with paying a defensive player this kind of money.

Seattle Is Building Around Its Young Stars

There’s another part of this story that shouldn’t be overlooked.

The Seahawks are clearly trying to keep the core of their team together.

Earlier this year, wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba signed a massive four-year, $168.8 million extension.

Now Witherspoon has received his own record-setting deal.

Seattle is basically saying:

These are our guys. We’re keeping them.

And after winning the Super Bowl last season, there’s a pretty good reason for that confidence.

But Here’s the Interesting Part…

Witherspoon might not hold the cornerback salary record for very long.

New England Patriots star Christian Gonzalez is also due for a massive contract, and Witherspoon’s new deal could give his camp an even stronger negotiating position.

So we could be watching another record fall before long.

That’s how crazy the NFL market has become.

A player signs the biggest contract at his position…

And somebody else is already preparing to beat it.

So, Is Devon Witherspoon Worth $132 Million?

That’s the million-dollar question.

Well… actually, it’s the $132 million question.

He’s a three-time Pro Bowler.

He’s already a Super Bowl champion.

He’s still only 25.

And Seattle clearly sees him as one of the most important pieces of its defense.

Now comes the hard part.

He’s got to prove the money was worth it.

Because once you become the highest-paid player at your position, every bad game gets noticed.

Every missed tackle gets talked about.

Every touchdown allowed becomes a headline.

That’s the price that comes with getting paid like a superstar.

But for now?

Devon Witherspoon has earned the right to enjoy it.

$132 million.

Not bad at all.
