Manchester United were supposed to start the new Premier League season with a little optimism.
Instead, they got a reality check.
Hull City 2, Manchester United 0.
And honestly, the scoreline doesn’t even tell the whole story.
United didn’t just lose to a newly promoted side. They looked short of ideas, struggled physically and once again found themselves making the kind of mistakes that have frustrated their supporters for years.
Hull Came Ready. United Didn’t.
From the opening whistle, Hull looked like the hungrier team.
The Tigers were playing their first Premier League match after returning to the top flight, and the atmosphere inside the MKM Stadium was electric.
United, meanwhile, never really settled.
Hull opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Semi Ajayi reacted quickest inside the box. Just 21 minutes later, Nobel Mendy doubled the lead with a header, leaving United with a mountain to climb before halftime.
And that was the worrying part.
United knew exactly what Hull were going to bring — energy, physicality and danger from set pieces.
They still couldn’t deal with it.
72% Possession. And Almost Nothing to Show for It.
Here’s where the result gets even more frustrating for United fans.
Manchester United had the majority of possession, but they couldn’t turn that possession into enough danger.
They finished with 21 shots, yet created only around 1.83 expected goals, with many of their attempts coming from poor positions.
That’s been one of the biggest problems with United for a while now.
Having the ball is one thing.
Knowing what to do with it is another.
Hull were comfortable defending their lead because United struggled to break through their five-man defensive setup.
Even Bruno Fernandes Has Had Enough
After the match, United captain Bruno Fernandes didn’t exactly hide his frustration.
His assessment was brutal.
Fernandes said United were making “the same mistakes as last season”, particularly in away games, and admitted they needed to press more aggressively and improve their set-piece defending.
That’s not the kind of quote Manchester United supporters want to hear after the first game of a new season.
But it’s difficult to argue with him.
Carrick Isn’t Pressing the Panic Button
Michael Carrick, however, isn’t ready to throw everything away after one game.
The United boss admitted the defeat was disappointing but insisted the result wouldn’t change the club’s overall direction.
He also acknowledged that going behind made the match much harder and said the team simply didn’t have enough spark to create more chances.
That’s understandable.
It’s one game.
But this is Manchester United we’re talking about.
Patience isn’t exactly the easiest thing to find at Old Trafford these days.
And Then There’s Marcus Rashford 👀
Another interesting part of the afternoon was Marcus Rashford’s return.
Rashford came on at halftime, making his first competitive appearance for United in 618 days.
Unfortunately for him, his introduction didn’t change the game.
United’s only real opportunity of the second half came when Bryan Mbeumo tested Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, who made the save.
That pretty much summed up United’s afternoon.
They had the ball.
They had the big names.
They had chances to respond.
But they never really looked like a team capable of turning the game around.
Is It Time to Panic?
No. Not yet.
It’s only the first game of the season.
But it would be foolish to pretend there aren’t warning signs.
United were beaten physically, struggled against Hull’s defensive shape and conceded twice from situations they knew they had to defend better.
And perhaps most concerning of all, some of those problems look very familiar.
The good news?
There are still plenty of games left to fix them.
The bad news?
Manchester United don’t have much time to figure things out.
Their next Premier League game is at Old Trafford against Ipswich Town, giving Carrick and his players an immediate opportunity to respond.
After a defeat like this, the pressure will be on.
Because Manchester United supporters aren’t expecting perfection.
They’re just expecting to see something better than this.
