Teófimo López didn’t knock Rolly Romero out.

He didn’t steamroll him either.

Instead, López did something that might have been even more impressive — he outboxed him for 12 rounds, survived Romero’s biggest shots and walked away with another world title.

López defeated Romero by majority decision Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, taking the WBA welterweight championship and becoming a three-division world champion.

The judges scored the fight 115–113, 116–112 and 114–114 in López’s favor.

But how exactly did he beat a fighter known for dangerous power?

The Jab Was the Difference 👊

The biggest answer is pretty simple: López’s jab.

He kept Romero at a distance, constantly touching him with the jab and making it difficult for Romero to set his feet and unleash his power.

By the end of the night, López had landed 124 punches compared with Romero’s 73, including a career-high 62 jabs.

It wasn’t flashy every second, but it worked.

López wasn’t standing in front of Romero waiting for a firefight. He was moving, picking his moments and forcing Romero to chase him.

But Then Things Got Ugly

López’s night wasn’t exactly comfortable.

In the fifth round, Romero landed a huge right hand that briefly stunned him. López was also cut near his right eye during the fight.

For a moment, it looked like Romero might be ready to change the entire fight.

He didn’t.

López recovered, settled back into his boxing and continued to control the distance.

Romero had another strong moment in the 11th round when he staggered López with a left hook, but once again, he couldn’t capitalize.

And that pretty much tells the story of the fight.

Romero had the power. López had the consistency.

Rolly Had His Chances

This wasn’t some easy night for López.

Romero landed some big punches and made López work for every round. But the problem was that he couldn’t maintain that pressure long enough to take control.

López kept going back to the same formula — jab, move, reset and attack when the opening appeared.

By the final bell, Romero had simply been outworked.

And that’s why the decision went López’s way.

Three Divisions. Three World Titles. 🏆

The win is a huge bounce-back for López.

He entered the fight coming off a unanimous-decision loss to Shakur Stevenson in January. Seven months later, he has moved up to 147 pounds and captured another world championship.

Now he’s a world champion at lightweight, junior welterweight and welterweight.

Not bad for a fighter many people were questioning after his loss to Stevenson.

Romero, meanwhile, wasn’t happy with the result and has reportedly called for a rematch.

And honestly, after a fight this close on the scorecards, it’s not hard to see why.

But for now, the belt belongs to López.

So how did Teófimo López beat Rolly Romero?

He didn’t try to out-punch him.

He outboxed him.

And when Romero finally found openings, López survived them.

That’s how you win a world title.
