This isn’t your usual boxing rivalry.

On Saturday night in Las Vegas, Teófimo López and Rolando “Rolly” Romero will walk into the ring as opponents — but these two guys used to be close friends.

Now they’re fighting for Romero’s WBA welterweight world title at T-Mobile Arena.

And somehow, the story behind this fight might be even more interesting than the fight itself.

From Friends to Rivals

López and Romero have known each other for years.

They trained and sparred together, came up around the same boxing scene and supported each other through some difficult moments in their careers.

At one point, their relationship went well beyond boxing.

Romero has even revealed that López gave him $5,000 during a difficult period in 2019 when he was dealing with a broken hand.

Romero also helped López through his own struggles, encouraging him not to walk away from boxing after a tough period in his career.

Now?

They’re trying to punch each other in the face for a world title.

Boxing is crazy. 😂

“The Friendship Disappeared”

The biggest twist is that López says the friendship effectively ended once the fight became official.

The two aren’t pretending this is some friendly sparring session anymore.

López is moving up to 147 pounds looking to become a champion in a third weight class, while Romero is making the first defense of the WBA welterweight championship he won last year.

And the tension has already started.

At the final press conference, the two exchanged some serious verbal shots, with López questioning Romero’s accomplishments and Romero firing back.

Whatever friendship existed before?

It’s definitely taking a back seat on Saturday night.

Romero Has Something to Prove

Romero enters the fight as the champion, but he’s still one of those fighters people love to doubt.

That changed somewhat after his massive upset victory over Ryan Garcia last year.

Now he’s got another opportunity to silence the critics.

A win over López would be a major addition to his résumé — especially because López has already held world titles at lightweight and junior welterweight.

López Is Fighting for More Than a Belt

For López, this is about getting his career moving again.

He suffered a defeat to Shakur Stevenson earlier this year and lost his junior-welterweight titles.

Now he’s jumping up to welterweight and immediately challenging for a world championship.

That’s a serious gamble.

But López believes the move could be exactly what he needed.

He’s talked about making major changes to his preparation and mentality ahead of the fight, calling this an opportunity to turn things around.

Speed vs. Power

That’s another reason this fight is so intriguing.

López brings speed, movement and technical ability.

Romero brings serious punching power and has shown that he can hurt opponents when he gets his shots off.

So you’ve got two fighters who know each other extremely well, but who have developed in very different directions.

And because they’ve actually sparred together before, each man knows the other isn’t going to surprise him easily.

Saturday Night Could Get Ugly

The fight takes place Saturday, August 22, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, with Romero’s WBA welterweight title on the line.

For Romero, it’s about proving that the Ryan Garcia victory wasn’t a fluke.

For López, it’s about becoming a three-division champion and showing that his best days aren’t behind him.

And for both?

It’s personal.

They may have once been friends.

They may have helped each other when things were difficult.

But once that bell rings, none of that matters.
