The Kansas City Chiefs just made a sneaky move that could become very important for Patrick Mahomes.
Kansas City acquired offensive lineman Joshua Ezeudu from the New York Giants in exchange for a 2028 seventh-round pick.
At first glance, it doesn’t sound like the blockbuster trade that gets everybody talking.
But look a little closer.
The Chiefs are trying to make sure Mahomes has enough protection heading into the 2026 season, and Ezeudu gives them another versatile option along the offensive line.
👀 Why Did the Giants Let Him Go?
This is where things get interesting.
Ezeudu was originally a third-round pick by the Giants in 2022 and has appeared in 33 games, making 10 starts. He’s capable of playing both guard and tackle, giving him valuable versatility.
But his time in New York never really developed the way the Giants hoped.
He missed the entire 2025 season because of a calf injury, although he reportedly looked much better during this year’s preseason after moving back toward guard.
So why trade him now?
Roster numbers.
The Giants are approaching the final 53-man roster deadline, and they apparently felt they could afford to move Ezeudu while collecting another draft pick.
🔥 Kansas City Saw an Opportunity
The Chiefs didn’t have to give up much.
A 2028 seventh-round pick isn’t exactly a huge price to pay for an offensive lineman with NFL experience and the ability to play multiple positions.
For Kansas City, that’s a low-risk move.
If Ezeudu develops into a reliable backup or even pushes for meaningful playing time, the Chiefs could end up looking very smart.
And if things don’t work out?
They barely gave anything up.
🛡️ Protecting Mahomes Is the Real Story
This is what makes the trade interesting.
Mahomes is coming off a significant knee injury, so keeping him upright is obviously a massive priority for Kansas City.
The Chiefs don’t need Ezeudu to become a superstar.
They need him to provide depth and protection.
That’s a much more realistic expectation.
And with the Chiefs already dealing with questions about their offensive-line depth, adding another experienced body before the roster deadline makes plenty of sense.

That’s probably the question Giants fans will be asking.
Ezeudu was once a third-round selection, and New York just re-signed him to a one-year deal earlier this year.
Now he’s gone for a late-round pick.
The Giants have been reshaping their offensive-line depth and have already moved another offensive lineman, Daniel Faalele, to Jacksonville earlier this preseason.
That suggests New York is comfortable with the players remaining on its roster.
Kansas City clearly saw something worth taking a chance on.
