Von Miller is going home.

The Dallas Cowboys have agreed to a one-year deal with the veteran pass rusher, bringing the Texas native back for his 15th NFL season. The deal is reportedly worth $5.5 million and can reach $7.5 million with incentives.

At 37 years old, Miller isn’t the same player who terrorized quarterbacks during his prime.

But that’s exactly what makes this signing interesting.

Is this a smart veteran move by Dallas, or are the Cowboys betting on a name that isn’t what it used to be?

Miller Still Has Something Left

Let’s not pretend Von Miller is finished.

He wouldn’t still be in the league if he were.

Last season with Washington, Miller recorded nine sacks, his best total since 2021. He did it while playing a rotational role rather than being an every-down player.

That’s actually encouraging.

Dallas doesn’t necessarily need Miller to be the superstar he was in Denver.

They need him to get after the quarterback.

If he can give them a few productive snaps each game, especially on passing downs, this could end up being a pretty useful signing.

But He’s 37

That’s the elephant in the room.

Miller is entering his 15th season, and he hasn’t made a Pro Bowl or All-Pro team since 2019.

Father Time eventually gets everybody.

The Cowboys have to hope Miller’s experience and technique can make up for whatever physical explosiveness he’s lost.

That’s a big ask.

But there’s another reason this move makes sense.

Dallas Needs Pass Rush Help

The Cowboys’ defense finished tied for 22nd in the NFL in sacks last season with 35.

That’s not good enough.

And after moving on from Micah Parsons, Dallas needed more help getting after quarterbacks.

Miller gives them something they didn’t have enough of:

experience.

He’s got 138.5 career sacks, the most among active NFL players and enough to rank him tied for ninth all time. He’s also a two-time Super Bowl champion and the MVP of Super Bowl 50.

You can’t teach that kind of experience.

This Isn’t Supposed to Be the Old Von Miller

And that’s probably the biggest thing Cowboys fans need to understand.

Dallas isn’t signing the Von Miller who won Super Bowl 50 with Denver.

They’re signing a veteran who can potentially come in, play a smaller role and make life miserable for quarterbacks in certain situations.

That’s a very different job.

And honestly, it could suit him.

A younger Miller might have been expected to play almost every snap.

At 37?

Let him pick his spots.

Keep him fresh.

Put him on the field when the Cowboys need someone who knows exactly how to attack a quarterback.

There’s Also the Homecoming Factor

This isn’t just another free-agent signing for Miller.

He’s a DeSoto, Texas native who played college football at Texas A&M before Denver selected him second overall in 2011.

Now he’s finally getting to wear the Cowboys uniform.

Miller himself described the move as a dream, and it’s easy to understand why.

He’s spent his entire career playing elsewhere.

Now he gets to finish a season at home.

That’s pretty cool.

So, Was This a Good Move?

I actually think it was.

The contract isn’t enormous, the commitment is only one year, and Dallas doesn’t need Miller to carry the defense.

If he gives them the nine sacks he produced last season?

The Cowboys will probably be thrilled.

If he gives them even more?

This could turn into one of those veteran signings everyone looks back on and says, “Yeah, that made a lot of sense.”

But if the age finally catches up with him, Dallas hasn’t committed itself for years.

That’s why the risk is fairly manageable.

Now We Wait

The Cowboys aren’t asking Von Miller to turn back the clock.

They’re asking him to help a defense that needs more pressure.

That’s a much more realistic expectation.

And if Miller can still find a way to get to quarterbacks when the game is on the line, Cowboys fans aren’t going to care how old he is.

They’ll just care about the sacks.

So, is Von Miller still that guy?

We’re about to find out.

And honestly, watching a future Hall of Famer try to squeeze one more great season out of his career in a Cowboys uniform could be pretty fun.
