The US Open is just around the corner, and somehow the biggest question isn’t who will win it.
It’s whether the two players everybody wants to see might even make it to New York.
Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are both dealing with injury concerns, putting the tournament’s biggest potential matchup in serious doubt.
And considering what these two have given tennis fans lately, that would be a massive disappointment.
Sinner Has a Knee Problem
Sinner, the current world No. 1, pulled out of the Cincinnati Open because of a right knee injury.
He hasn’t played competitively since winning Wimbledon, and his team is reportedly taking things carefully rather than rushing him back. The latest reports indicate Sinner will only play the US Open if he’s fully fit.
That’s probably the smart move.
But with the US Open starting its main draw on August 30, the clock is ticking.
And Then There’s Alcaraz
Alcaraz’s situation might be even more frustrating.
The defending US Open champion has been out since April after suffering a wrist injury, and he hasn’t played a competitive match in months.
There is, however, some encouraging news.
Alcaraz has been back on the practice court in Spain and recently trained with Holger Rune. Reports say he looked sharp during the session, although he’s still wearing protection around the injured wrist.
So he’s getting closer.
The problem?
Nobody knows yet if he’ll actually play.
Imagine the US Open Without Both of Them
That’s the nightmare scenario.
Sinner and Alcaraz have basically become the rivalry of men’s tennis.
Their head-to-head record is currently 5-5, and they’ve already produced some incredible matches. Their most recent meeting came in April, when Sinner beat Alcaraz in the Monte Carlo final.
And remember what happened at last year’s US Open?
Alcaraz beat Sinner in the final.
So naturally, fans are already dreaming about a rematch.
But right now, that’s anything but guaranteed.
Who Takes Advantage If They’re Gone?
This is where things get interesting.
If Sinner and Alcaraz both miss the tournament — or arrive less than 100% — the door suddenly swings wide open for everyone else.
Players like Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev and others would see a much clearer path to the title.
And that’s what makes this situation so fascinating.
The US Open could go from being another chapter in the Sinner-Alcaraz rivalry to one of the most unpredictable Grand Slams we’ve seen in years.
But There’s Still Hope
Neither player has officially been ruled out.
Alcaraz is training.
Sinner is working on his recovery.
And with more than a week still remaining before the main draw begins, plenty can change.
That’s why it’s probably too early to start writing either man off.
Still, tennis fans have every right to be nervous.
Because the one matchup everybody wants to see could be the one matchup New York doesn’t get.
So, are we about to lose the biggest showdown in tennis?
Right now…
Nobody really knows. And that’s exactly what makes this US Open so interesting. 👀
