The Formula 1 summer break is over, and Kimi Antonelli wasted absolutely no time reminding everyone that he’s still right in the championship fight.
The Mercedes driver topped the opening practice session at the Dutch Grand Prix, finishing ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris.
It was only practice, so nobody should be handing Antonelli the trophy just yet.
But it was definitely a statement.
Antonelli Came Out Flying
After several weeks away from racing, drivers had to get back into the rhythm at Zandvoort.
Antonelli looked completely comfortable.
The 19-year-old put together the fastest lap of the session and finished just ahead of Norris, while championship leader Oscar Piastri was further down the order.
That immediately gave Mercedes something to smile about.
And for Antonelli, it was a reminder that he isn’t simply there to make up the numbers.
But Can He Actually Challenge for the Championship?
That’s where things get interesting.
Antonelli has already shown flashes of serious speed this season, but consistency is going to be the real test.
He’s fighting against drivers who have been competing at the front for years.
And with the championship battle tightening, every qualifying position and every point matters.
A strong weekend in the Netherlands could be exactly what Antonelli needs.
McLaren Won’t Be Panicking
Norris finishing second in practice will hardly have the McLaren garage shaking.
Practice sessions can be misleading.
Teams run different fuel loads, different tyre strategies and different setups, so the times don’t always tell the full story.
McLaren have been one of the strongest teams throughout the season, and they’ll be expected to fight back when qualifying arrives.
That’s why Antonelli’s real test comes later.
Can Mercedes keep this pace when it actually counts?
Zandvoort Could Get Very Interesting
The Dutch Grand Prix is one of the more demanding circuits on the calendar.
It’s fast, narrow and not exactly the easiest place to overtake.
That makes qualifying extremely important.
If Antonelli can put the Mercedes near the front when Saturday comes around, suddenly the pressure shifts onto everyone else.
And if he manages to turn pole position into a strong race result?
Well…
Then people might have to start taking his championship chances a lot more seriously.
The Big Question
Antonelli has already proven he has the speed.
Now he needs to prove he can put everything together consistently.
One practice session doesn’t win a championship.
But if Friday’s pace turns into qualifying speed and race-day performance, the rest of the F1 grid could have a serious problem.
For now, though, Antonelli has done exactly what he needed to do.
He came back from the summer break…
and immediately put his name at the top of the timing sheets.
π Was that a warning shot to the rest of F1?
It certainly looked like one.
