FIFA is facing fresh controversy after attempting to prevent supporters from displaying Iran’s pre-revolutionary “Lion and Sun” flag during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The governing body ruled that the historic flag, widely used by many Iranians living abroad as a symbol of opposition to Iran’s current government, fell under its ban on political symbols inside World Cup stadiums. A last-minute legal challenge failed, allowing FIFA’s restrictions to remain in place ahead of Iran’s clash with New Zealand. However, fans still managed to bring the flags into the stadium, with dozens seen waving them throughout the match.
The decision has sparked heated debate, with critics accusing FIFA of suppressing freedom of expression, while FIFA maintains its Stadium Code prohibits political banners, flags, and symbols at tournament venues. The match itself was played amid heightened political tensions, making the atmosphere inside and outside the stadium as significant as the football on the pitch.
As the 2026 World Cup continues, the controversy surrounding Iran’s supporters and the banned flag is likely to remain one of the tournament’s biggest off-field talking points.
