Belgium’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign got off to a frustrating start after being held to a 1-1 draw by Egypt, with Mohamed Salah’s side producing one of the biggest statements of the tournament so far.

Egypt shocked the Red Devils in the 19th minute when Emam Ashour fired the Pharaohs into the lead, silencing the Belgian supporters and putting the tournament favorites under immediate pressure. Belgium dominated possession but struggled to create clear-cut chances against Egypt’s disciplined defensive setup.

Belgium finally found a way back in the 66th minute, but even then fortune played a part. Under intense pressure from Romelu Lukaku, Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany turned the ball into his own net for an unfortunate own goal that leveled the match.

Despite throwing everything forward in search of a winner, Belgium couldn’t find the breakthrough. Goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir produced several crucial saves, while Egypt’s defense stood firm to secure a famous point—the nation’s first-ever point at a FIFA World Cup.

For Belgium, the result raises immediate concerns. A squad packed with talent, including Kevin De Bruyne, Jeremy Doku, and Lukaku, was expected to begin the tournament with three points. Instead, they’ll head into their next Group G match with questions already being asked.

Egypt, meanwhile, leaves Seattle with renewed belief. If this performance is any indication, the Pharaohs may be ready to rewrite their World Cup history.
